Heathrow Airport off to a flyer in 2019
It's been a stellar start to the year for Heathrow Airport which announced that passenger numbers have continued to climb in the first month of 2019.

January saw 5.9 million passengers move through the airport, which was up 2.1 per cent from the same month in 2018 and is the 27th consecutive monthly increase.

Leading the way in terms of growth were passengers from Africa (up 9.7 per cent) and Asia (up 5.6 per cent), with particularly strong growth from Morocco (up 40 per cent), China (up 27 per cent), Ethiopia (up 27 per cent), Nigeria (up 13 per cent) and South Africa (up 12 per cent).

Contributing to a busy month for those working in travel jobs at the airport was the 4.9 per cent increase in passengers from the US and the 1.6 per cent rise from the EU, but the month saw a 9.3 per cent dip in UK passengers.

The picture was broadly similar when looking at the past 12 months, with overall passenger numbers rising by 2.8 per cent to reach 80.2 million. Africa once again led the increases with a 5.9 per cent rise, while North America grew by 4.7 per cent, Latin America rose by 4.3 per cent and the EU increased by 3.1 per cent, but UK numbers dipped by 1.3 per cent.

Looking at cargo, 130,000 metric tonnes travelled through Heathrow last month which was down by 1.8 per cent from last January. The best performing markets were Africa (up 8.9 per cent) and Latin America (up 8.8 per cent), but the EU saw a fall of 22.3 per cent and the UK fell by 60.5 per cent compared to last January.

Speaking about the airport's figures, John Holland-Kaye, Chief Executive Officer at Heathrow, said: "2019 is off to a stellar start, with more passengers choosing to use Heathrow because of our improved service and lower costs."
