C&M Travel Salary Index - February 2018

  • Fall in travel salaries counters January’s gains
  • Northern wages rise 3.32 per cent, but southern pay dips
  • Number of new travel jobs rises again

Weak month for travel wages

In an almost exact reversal of January’s figures, average salaries for new jobs in travel dipped by 7.27 per cent in February 2018 to fall back to the same level as in December, according to the latest Travel Salary Index from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which surveyed all new vacancies registered with the companies during the month.

After rising by 7.91 per cent in the first month of the year, wages dipped to £24,648 in February to stand £20 higher than at the end of 2017. Salaries for standard travel jobs (those paying up to £40,000) fell by 6.83 per cent last month to £22,796, but remain £991 above the figure recorded in December 2017 after rising by 12.21 per cent in January.

Despite the overall decrease in salaries last month, there was still a 3.32 per cent rise in wages for new travel jobs based in the north of the UK, with average pay reaching £22,963.

Vacancies on the rise

For the thirteenth time in the past 14 months, the number of travel jobs being created increased year-on-year, however there was a small reduction in the number of new candidates looking for jobs in travel.

Speaking about the figures, Barbara Kolosinska, Director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, said: “Salaries have got off to a volatile start so far this year but are still up marginally from December. But what’s probably more important is that vacancy numbers are at historically high levels and are continuing to rise – we haven’t seen more jobs being created in any February since at least 2011.

“Placement numbers are also up significantly with a 28 per cent year-on-year rise, so while salaries have been unstable in the first two months of 2018, travel recruitment activity levels continue to be very healthy.”
