Slow month for travel recruitment

The number of candidates being placed in new travel jobs has fallen back to its lowest level in 16 months, according to the latest figures from C&M Travel Recruitment.

April's total was down by 41 per cent from March and was the lowest figure since December 2021. Compared to previous years, last month's number was down by 64 per cent from April 2022 and 47 per cent below April 2019.

After reaching a five-year high in March, the number of new candidates also dipped in April. Last month's total was down by 38 per cent from the previous month, but remained up by ten per cent from April 2022. The number was up by 39 per cent from April 2021 and up by nine per cent from April 2019.

Vacancies dip

There was also a fall in new vacancies which decreased to their lowest level since December. April's total was down by 49 per cent from March and by 61 per cent from last April. The figure was up by 67 per cent from April 2021, but down by 47 per cent from April 2019.

Speaking about the stats, Barbara Kolosinska, Managing Director at C&M Travel Recruitment, said: "April was the slowest month for travel recruitment that we have seen for some time. Much of this downturn can be attributed to Easter, which appeared to have a larger impact on activity than usual, with many decision makers taking time off during the month. However, May is already looking like a much more positive month – despite the multiple bank holidays.

"After a historic year for travel recruitment, 2023 has had a much more mixed start, with placements and vacancies both increasing in two of the first four months of the year and falling in the other two. With quality candidates still being in short supply, it is vitally important that we do all we can to entice talent to work in the industry by making our new job opportunities as exciting, well-paid and attractive as possible."
