Tomorrow's Travel Leaders: 30 Under 30: John-Christian Moquette
In collaboration with TTG Digital, the ITT and Guoman Hotels, C&M Travel Recruitment set out to discover the 30 most inspiring and dynamic people in the travel industry aged 30 years and younger - the 30 Under 30.
Here we profile John-Christian Moquette, founding partner of IAVRA (The International Association of Villa Rental Agents).
Q: Why did you want to get involved in the travel industry?
A: "I have travelled from a young age and we always travelled as a family to lots of different places. I was born in Canada but grew up in Switzerland, my mother's Greek and my father's Canadian, Dutch and Swiss, so it is a very international background!
"It seemed like an obvious choice to go into travel, but I kind of fell into it career wise because I actually studied law and then ended up being offered a job at a company that was a membership club that did high-end travel for its clients."
Q: How does it feel to be in the final 30 of Tomorrow's Travel Leaders?
A: "I definitely felt very honoured to be part of the final 30. When I went there and saw the different candidates that were chosen, I felt even more honoured because they are an impressive bunch of people - very dynamic. I was honoured and excited to see what it would offer."
Q: Has the recognition had any impact on your career?
A: "Absolutely. For a start, it helped with just getting our name out there. We have [the 30 Under 30 logo] on our emails and we use it to promote ourselves. As a result, we have also had a few features in TTG which have definitely helped and, finally, through the event I have met a lot of really interesting people.
"It is early days but it feels like we could do some good business together as a result of it. I never would have met those people if it wasn't for 30 Under 30."
Q: What advice do you have for young people looking to make their mark in the travel industry?
A: "Take opportunities as they come to you and don't be afraid to try things out. Even if it doesn't seem like the right opportunity or the thing that is going to lead you to your eventual goals, interestingly, it always seems to work out.
"Try different things; if a job or an offer comes along, even if it doesn't seem like the right offer for now, it might end up bringing you where you need to go. Also, networking is definitely key to getting where you need to go."
