Tourism targets 'may be missed'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs.Thailand may miss its target of attracting 15.7 million tourists this year amid fears over political and social unrest in the country, it has been revealed.
Bloomberg reports that the current unrest in the country could also be affecting economic growth through a fall in tourist capital expenditure.
For individuals interested in travel jobs, Thai prime minister Samak Sundaravej declared a nationwide state of emergency earlier this week after 5,000 demonstrators descended on Government House in the country's capital.
Apichart Sankary, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, commented to the news provider: "The global economy has already delayed travel decisions. If the situation can't be resolved by the middle of this month, we will lose a lot of tourists."
Meanwhile, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has reported that a number of major demonstrations have taken place in Bangkok and is advising travellers to the area to keep themselves informed of developments.
