Skiers 'may not be able to claim on EHIC'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs.Britons planning on hitting the slopes abroad this winter have been advised by one sector commentator that they will not be able to make a claim on their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) should they be injured.
According to Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, this is because such destinations only provide private medical centres, which those seeking tourism careers may be interested to know.
He explained that this meant some skiers could find themselves facing a costly bill if they do have an accident.
"You won't be able to claim it on your European Health Insurance Card so that's going to be expensive as well. You're going to have to pay a private bill," he stated.
According to the Foreign Commonwealth Office, an emergency abroad can be extremely expensive.
For example, a scheduled flight, stretcher and doctor escort from Australia could set a holidaymaker back £15,000 to £20,000, while an air ambulance from the USA's east coast could cost £35,000 to £45,000.
