Richard Branson 'to build world's eco-friendliest destination'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs.Business tycoon Sir Richard Branson has unveiled plans to create the most environmentally-friendly tourism destination in the world, it has been revealed.
Proposals by the chairman of the Virgin Group will see Mosquito Island - one of his privately-owned pieces of land within the Caribbean's British Virgin Islands - receive a beachfront restaurant and 20 villas.
Under the plans, the resort will be powered using solar panels and wind turbines, with all food sourced locally and organically.
Meanwhile, all motorised transport at Mosquito Island will be run via biofuels.
In an article in Business Week, he said: "It is actually inexcusable for the Caribbean to need to use dirty fuels anymore when it has all these natural resources on its doorstep."
The Virgin head added that he hopes Mosquito Island will be a model for other tourism destinations in the Caribbean to adopt sustainable solutions to rising fuel costs.
Earlier this year, Fiona Jeffrey, chair at the World Travel Market, claimed that tour operators and travel agents should do more to offer responsible tourism as demand for these kind of holidays increases.
