Olympics 'offers opportunities for domestic tourism'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs. The 2012 London Olympics offers those in the travel industry a great chance to promote British tourism, it has been reported.
Speaking at an Institute of Travel & Tourism event held at the House of Commons, tourism minister Margaret Hodge claimed that the sporting event will not only act as a showcase for domestic tourism but provide the platform to revitalise the sector as a whole, Travel Weekly reports.
Ms Hodge said: "Tourism is fantastically important to government, it's one of the most important industries."
"We've got a terrific opportunity with the Olympic games here in 2012."
Earlier this year, Andy Burnham, secretary of state for culture, media and sport, reported that the domestic tourism sector is to be boosted in the build-up to the 2012 games.
Mr Burnham was also one of a number of MPs across all three major political parties who pledged their support to British Tourism Week - which took place this March - and called for travel agents to place more on domestic breaks.
