Marseille selected as 2013 Capital of Culture
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs.Marseille is to be the European Capital of Culture for 2013, it has been revealed.
France had already been selected as the host for the winner, with the south-west city being chosen ahead of the other short-listed destinations - Lyon, Toulouse and Bordeaux.
Jan Figel, member of the European Commission with responsibility for education, training, culture and youth, said: "I congratulate Marseille on its nomination and am particularly pleased with the level of commitment to becoming the Capital of Culture for 2013."
He added that being a capital of culture "brings big cultural and socioeconomic rewards" not just for the host cities but to Europe as a whole.
Such news could be of interest to those with jobs in the travel industry.
Marseille's selection is to be formally presented to the Council of Ministers of the European Union next May.
In other news, PKF Hotel Consultancy Services recently reported that Liverpool - the current European capital of culture - witnessed a 12.6 per cent increase in hotel occupancy rates over the course of July compared to same month in 2007.
