Online fraudsters 'cheating airlines'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs. Those working in the travel industry may be concerned to hear that airlines worldwide lost over $1.4 billion (£944 million) to online fraudsters in 2008, according to new research.
CyberSource revealed in its latest report that this was equivalent to some 1.3 per cent of airlines' online revenue and this represents approximately 0.9 percent of total worldwide online airline ticket sales.
A spokesperson for CyberSource explained that fraud was committed when fraudsters book their tickets as late as possible - such as 48 hours before departure - leaving the criminal with a higher chance of selling or using the ticket before it can be cancelled by the airline's fraud department.
"We have seen higher fraud rates on bookings when the cardholder is not travelling on the flight. Similarly, fraud rates on one-way journeys are higher than those for return tickets," he added.
The fraud losses reported by CyberSource include losses for all payment methods, in addition to fraud charge-backs from credit and debit cards.
