APD reform 'doesn't encourage filling of planes'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs. The recent government reforms to air passenger duty (APD) have failed to cover freight and transfer travellers and as a result do not put pressure on airlines to attempt to fill empty seats, one sector commentator has claimed, a point those with travel agency jobs may be concerned with.
Richard Dyer, aviation campaigner from Friends of the Earth, said that the charity was disappointed that officials had "tinkered" with the policy at the last minute, despite promising that a charge would be applied per plane.
"Some of the changes they've made are good, substantial increases on long-haul journeys are a good thing," he explained.
However, Mr Dyer added that APD did not encourage aircraft to get "bums on seats" which the aviation duty would have done.
Last week, the government decided to reform the APD regime rather than proceed with a per plane tax, as laid out in the pre-Budget report.
