Advice on malaria 'should be provided by travel agents'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs.Those working in the travel industry should do more to provide guidance to holidaymakers about contracting malaria, it has been suggested.
A team of medical experts from the department of infectious diseases at Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire Hospital claimed that both tour operators and airlines need to educate tourists travelling to areas where the disease is prevalent.
In a review, 27 brochures from British tour operators were studied with less than half indicated to contain any information about malaria.
However, it was stated that all of the holiday guides offered breaks to destinations in Africa where malaria is endemic.
Now the International Air Transport Association and the Association of British Travel Agents have been called upon to give advice on the disease, including treating it.
The team reported: "We believe that the travel industry has an obligation to improve the quantity and quality of the malaria advice it provides in its brochures and other promotional publications."
In other news, a recent Travel Weekly study showed that travel agents are receiving an improving service from tour operators when making holiday reservations or booking amendments.
