London hotels 'vulnerable'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs.Hotels in the UK's capital are far more vulnerable to the effects of the credit crunch, one sector commentator has claimed, which may in turn lead to an increase in travel employment in other regions.
Liz Hall, head of hospitality and leisure research at PricewaterhouseCoopers, explained that this was because before the economic downturn many prices in London had been able to increase as it was the centre of business and tourism.
She added that while some parts of the city - such as the West End theatre district - were still doing quite well, towards the financial areas there had been "a lot" of hotel cancellations.
"It's got a lot of upscale hotels and there is a lot more competition there as they are fighting for the same business," Ms Hall stated.
According to STR Global's recent RevPAR report on hotels in the UK, the British hotel market has been following the worldwide trend of declining occupancies and growing rates for the first nine months of 2008.
