Indeed, David Rushton, director of UK field sales at Accor Hotels UK, said he knew of no hotel firm that was building specifically for the Olympics.
He added that there were currently 3,500 bedrooms coming into London but that as it took seven to eight years to get construction underway - after acquiring the land and conceiving the design - it was not possible to create hotels just for one particular event.
Mr Rushton went on to note: "Hotels have to run very differently during the 16-day period. It is a 24-hour business and it is also about gearing up staff differently, you have to have tremendous flexibility."
Figures from PFK Hotel Consultancy Services have shown a 1.3 per cent increase year-on-year in London hotel occupancy.
