Fuel prices 'affecting need for runway slots'
Travel industry news brought to you by C & M Recruitment, specialists in business travel jobs. The rising cost of oil is affecting the efficient running of airlines and airports and more runway slots are needed to help alleviate this problem.
These are the views of Laurence Price, director of aviation strategy at Mott MacDonald, who said that at present fuel bills are making up 40 per cent of an airline's annual running costs.
He commented that airlines were wasting fuel while waiting for airport slots to open up and more slots were needed to combat this problem.
Mr Price noted: "Where we need additional infrastructure is for runway slots, so we can get aircraft in the air and out of the air on arrival, instead of standing around which is wasting fuel and wasting resources."
Meanwhile, in news which could be of interest to those working in the travel industry, the Civil Aviation Authority recently published its new Aviation Trends report.
It found that in the first quarter of 2008 overall domestic passenger volumes in the UK fell by two per cent, however, the number of people travelling to the US and the rest of the world rose by four per cent.
