Under-35s 'more likely to use agent'

Under-35s 'more likely to use agent'

The under-35s are more likely to use a travel agent than any other age group - so it makes sense for those working in travel jobs to pay as much attention to younger customers as any others.

TravelVision 2012 - a British Travel Awards poll - took data from 21,000 consumers between July and October 2011. It found that nearly half of all respondents saw the internet as their most important research tool for planning holidays.

However, those aged under-35 were more likely to use a travel agent to book their break than any other age group.

British Travel Awards chief Lorraine Barnes Burton said: "The under-35s should be valued. This group is also the most open to buying holiday extras."

But some agents say they assumed people in the so-called Facebook generation booked holidays online.

Aito Specialist Travel Agents chairman Oliver Broad, of Robert Broad Travel, said: "We overlook that market. But if you get them at 35 you may well have them as a client for life."

Claire Hunt, of Journeys a la Carte in Uttoxeter, agreed: "It's a tough market but I don't think we target it enough."
