Travel agents boosted by early interest

Travel agent boosted by early interest

Travel agents have reported that they had an "extremely positive" amount of interest on their first day back after Christmas, news which offers a boost to those working in travel jobs.

Many agents are now feeling optimistic about the year ahead following the rush of travel enquiries from consumers keen to offset the winter blues by looking into booking a summer holiday.

Julia Lo Bue-Said, leisure director at Advantage, explained that it is too early to know how many of the enquiries will materialise into bookings, but stressed that they were "very encouraging signs".

She added: "We've had reports that there were very positive enquiry numbers coming through yesterday. I think the bad weather definitely helped, as well as the high degree of coverage that we've seen for holidays in advertising over the Christmas break."

Phil Hindle, assistant manager at Cathedral City Travel, also revealed that his firm had enjoyed a strong opening to 2012.

He said: "We did seem very busy - we made some good bookings, some of which were pretty large.

"If business continues for the rest of the year in the same vein... we will be very happy."
