Manchester Airports Group 'seeks expansion'

Manchester Airports Group has revealed it is seeking to buy another UK airport under efforts to strengthen its industry position.

The group, which includes Manchester, East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside, has not yet revealed the airports in which it's interested.

However, Stansted and Edinburgh airports have been put up for sale by their owners BAA after the competition regulator ruled on the matter.

The announcement is big news for the UK travel  industry, and could have an impact upon those working in travel jobs at whichever airport is targeted.

Manchester City Council owns more than half of the group, while the nine other Greater Manchester authorities each have 5%. The local authorities are considering the recommendations.

A joint statement by the authorities and the airport said: "Manchester Airports Group (MAG) is aiming high to strengthen its position as one of the leading airport operators in the country.

"MAG is already a key driver of jobs and growth in the North of England, but these proposals would allow the group to strengthen this position - and deliver maximum value for the local authority shareholders."

The group said it wanted to bring in partners to help finance the deal.
