Lufthansa hails successful 2011

Lufthansa hails successful 2011

German airline Lufthansa posted record-breaking numbers for 2011, carrying more passengers to and from the UK and Ireland than in any other previous year.

A new route between Aberdeen and Frankfurt meant the biggest rise was to be found in Scotland, where passenger numbers grew by more than a quarter. Elsewhere, Lufthansa's routes to and from Dublin and Birmingham enjoyed substantial increases in passenger traffic.

In total, there was an increase in passenger numbers of more than a tenth, taking the overall number of people carried last year to 4,151,363.

The airline also announced the start of new services between Berlin and both Manchester and Birmingham to take advantage of the new Berlin Brandenburg airport, which is likely to create more travel jobs  when it opens in June.

Christian Schindler, general manager of Lufthansa, said the announcement of new services between British cities and Berlin highlighted the firm's continued commitment to the UK and Ireland.

He added: "As well as offering passengers quick and easy access to many of the main German cities, we continue to ensure that our flights to and from the UK and Ireland offer the shortest possible onward connection times to our worldwide network."
