London City Airport expects Olympics boost

London City Airport expects Olympics boost

London City Airport is predicting significant increases in passenger numbers this year, largely due to the Olympics.

The airport believes its close proximity and simple transport links to the main 2012 Games venues in Stratford will make a big difference to its traffic.

There is also expected to be an increase in business travel as London City receives flights from major European business hubs, along with the British Airways all-business class service to JFK airport in New York.

Last year passenger numbers increased by 7.6% to just over three million, compared with 2.8 million in 2010.

They were the highest passenger numbers recorded since it served 3.3 million people in 2008.

Richard Gooding, the airport's chief executive, said: "It's encouraging to see increasing passenger movements in what has undoubtedly been a challenging period for the travel industry.

"We have invested over £7 million in the terminal over the past year, extending the Central Search area, as well as other improvements, to ensure that the airport continues to deliver the time saving proposition promised, even with an increased number of passengers."
