First UK Fair Trade break on offer

Kuoni has become the first UK tour operator to offer a certified Fair Trade package holiday.

The company has been awarded Fair Trade accreditation for one its South African breaks after working closely with Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA).

The feat was achieved after FTTSA ruled that all companies and workers involved in the holiday package were fairly treated.

In order to receive accreditation from the FTTSA, Kuoni had to prove that its employees and suppliers were paid fairly, it provided good working conditions, paid bills before its clients went on holiday and it honoured cancellation fees.

Furthermore, each package is subject to an additional charge of between £31 and £37, which is spent on community projects designed to benefit those working within the supply chain of the package holiday.

Matthias Leisinger, Kuoni's head of corporate responsibility, revealed that interest in Fair Trade holidays was growing, but admitted that it was also up to tour operators to create demand.

He said: "We're taking a certain risk by being the first to talk about Fair Trade in tourism but when you can buy hundreds of Fair Trade products every day in the supermarket, why shouldn't it work in the tourism industry?"
