Japan targets golf holiday boom

Japan targets golf holiday boom

Tour operators could experience a rise in customer demand for golfing holidays in Japan after the country's tourism board launched an initiative to promote their courses.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) launched the scheme to entice people to holiday in the Land of the Rising Sun specifically to enjoy a few games of golf.

It is unlikely that golf enthusiasts will take much persuading as there are approximately 2,400 courses in the country, many of which are championship standard.

Japan has the second highest number of golf courses per country in the world, second only to the US, while green fees for many Japanese courses are reasonably priced.

The JNTO claims its courses are known for their strategic aspects, impeccable maintenance and scenic beauty, aspects they plugged at the International Golf travel Market in Turkey earlier this month, which attracted 450 exhibitors and 350 buyers.

Peter Walton, chief executive of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, said: "There is a common perception that golf in Japan is expensive, but in fact, particularly in Hokkaido, the green fees vary enormously and perhaps most interesting of all is that the restaurants, bars and other commodities are reasonably priced and deliver a value for money that will pleasantly surprise many."
