Heathrow reports record December

Heathrow reports record December

UK airports enjoyed a busy Christmas period as the lack of snow boosted passenger numbers, a new report shows.

BAA said Heathrow recorded its busiest ever December, with 5.52 million passengers passing through the airport.

Overall, the group's six UK airports saw a 4.4% increase in passengers last year, with no repeat of the disruptions faced by the UK travel industry in 2010.

The company handled 108.5 million passengers during 2011, with 69.4 million of these at Heathrow.

This figure was up by 5.5% from the previous year, when heavy snowfall closed the airport and forced thousands of passengers to camp overnight.

There was a record 476,197 flights at the west London airport last year, 99.2% of its annual limit of 480,000.

The figures also show that passenger numbers at Edinburgh Airport were up 9.2% to a record 9.38 million in 2011.

Glasgow's figure rose 5.1% to 6.86 million and Aberdeen was up 11.8% to 3.10 million, BAA said.

Southampton saw passenger numbers rise by 1.6% to 1.76 million, but Stansted's figure was down 2.8% to 18.04 million.

While total passenger numbers for the six airports were up 4.4%, BAA said the underlying increase was 0.9% after factoring in 2010's exceptional events such as the British Airways strikes and the disruption caused by volcanic ash and heavy snow.
