Heathrow passes 70 million mark

Heathrow passes 70 million mark

The 12 months to the end of March saw 70 million passengers pass through Heathrow Airport for the first time in a single year, figures have shown.

On a monthly basis, the airport's five terminals handled 5.7 million passengers during March - encouraging news for people keen to secure travel jobs working at an airport.

The figure for March was up nearly 7% year-on-year, attributed to people jetting off ahead of the Easter break.

The month saw BAA record an overall rise of 4%, handling 8.6 million passengers during March. Boosts at Glasgow and Aberdeen were evened out by falling numbers at Stansted, Edinburgh and Southampton, the figures showed.

Colin Matthews, BAA chief executive, said: "Reaching 70 million passengers at Heathrow is a major milestone, demonstrating the resilience of the airport in an otherwise challenging economic environment."
