Green hotels programme announced

Green hotels programme announced

People working in travel jobs  will be able to use a new certification scheme to look at a hotel's green credentials.

The Eco-Certified Hotel Programme by Sabre Holdings will allow travel agents and travel management companies to choose hotels based on their eco-friendliness.

The scheme was developed in light of the popularity of the Green Hotel Directory on Sabre's Travelocity website, and will be of help to those arranging business travel  for clients with specific environmental requirements.

The programme was devised alongside a number of organisations, including the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and academic institutions.

Harald Eisenaecher, EMEA senior vice president of Sabre Travel Network, said the huge response from customers to the directory prompted adding it to the global distribution system (GDS).

"This trend of eco-friendly hotels and green travel is here to stay. We are the first GDS to have eco-certified hotels, we are the first to respond to this need," he added.
