Ex-PM Major opens Gatwick extension

Ex-PM Major opens Gatwick extension

Former prime minister Sir John Major is officially opening a £73 million terminal extension at Gatwick Airport.

The Conservative ex-PM is opening the extension to the North Terminal at the second biggest airport in the UK. The new development is aimed at helping the terminal cater for 20 million passengers per year by 2020.

The multimillion-pound extension, including 18 new check-in desks, brings hope for travel industry growth in the otherwise gloomy economic climate. There are now 144 check-in desks, 70 of them self-service, along with four new luggage reclaim belts, three for international flights and one for domestic.

"Airports are the front door of the UK and for visitors to Britain their first impressions of our country are shaped by what they see and experience when they land," said Sir John.

The dated 80s feel which met passengers at the terminal involving poor aesthetic appeal and confusing wayfinding is gone, said Gatwick chief executive Stewart Wingate.

"Today, the layout and design of the upgraded forecourt, interchange facilities and the expanded terminal building provide a much more positive first impression," he said.
