Thomas Cook and Co-op merger given final go-ahead![]() ![]() After receiving preliminary clearance from the Competition Commission in July, the merger between Co-op Travel and Thomas Cook has been given final clearance by the commission. The commission has confirmed its findings in July that the merger would not result in 'substantial lessening of competition'. When the merger goes ahead, it will create more than 1,300 retail shops across the country, creating the UK's largest retail travel chain. Thomas Cook has estimated that they will have to close about 75 outlets as a result of the merger. It is hoped the merge will be completed by October.
