Britons' overseas trips 'rose in 2011'

Britons' overseas tips 'rose in 2011'

Tour operators will be among those toasting the news that the number of Britons jetting off on overseas breaks rose last year.

The Office for National Statistics' Overseas Travel and Tourism Report - released every year - showed that numbers were up by 0.8%. The rise came after four years without growth.

However, the report showed that people were more focused on shorter breaks and weren't spending as much as they had during some previous years.

The figures also showed that the number of people travelling overseas during February was up compared to the same period a year earlier.

In all, 6.56 million trips overseas were taken in the first two months of 2012, and £1.86 billion was spent abroad in February - representing a year-on-year rise for spending.

ABTA's senior research and public affairs manager Stephen D'Alfonso said: "The figures show an increase in the number of package holidays taken and also a rise in popularity of short-haul holidays, suggesting that people are seeking the greater financial security offered by a package and opting to holiday closer to home."
