Atol protection changes announced

Atol protection changes announced

Changes to Atol consumer financial protection are to be introduced from April 30, transport minister Theresa Villiers has announced.

The move is likely to have an impact on people working in travel jobs , as it will make Atol cover compulsory for travel agents selling "dynamic packages" of flights plus accommodation or car hire.

This means each traveller buying such a package will have to pay an additional Atol Protection Contribution of £2.50 per booking.

Travel agencies offering dynamic packages will either have to obtain a Flight-Plus licence for themselves or sell the packages under the licence of an approved body. Alternatively they can also sell package holidays that are covered by the licence of a supplier.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said the changes will not come into full effect until October 1.

Villiers said: "The Atol scheme has been providing peace of mind for holidaymakers for decades, but the way we book holidays has changed and the scheme needs to move with the times. All too often customers are unsure as to whether they are protected or not."
