Airports urged to focus on passengers

Airport urged to focus on passengers

The Government has unveiled new plans to ensure airports put the interests of passengers first.

The draft Civil Aviation Bill unveiled by ministers would give airports the single primary duty of promoting the interests of the airline passengers who travel through them.

Meanwhile, the plans would also see the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) handed the power to issue fines to airports that fail to comply with their licence conditions.

Airports could face fines of 10% of their yearly turnover if they failed to meet the standards expected of them.

As part of the CAA's new role, the authority would also be tasked with setting performance measures at the country's major airports in a more flexible manner.

Additionally, it would be required to encourage new investments in airport improvements.

However, the draft Bill ensures that aviation security policy duties would remain with the Government's transport secretary rather than being transferred to the CAA.
