Abta predicts busy bookings period

Tour operators are set for a boost as an estimated two million people are expected to book holidays this week, according to Abta.

With substantial discounts available for early bookers, the third week of January is traditionally a busy period for many travel companies. Holidays to Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy are expected to be popular because the pound has strengthened against the euro in recent weeks.

The call suggests that people working in travel jobs will be busy over the coming days.

An Abta spokeswoman said: "With two four-day weekends in the first half of 2012, many people are expected to take advantage of the time off work and go abroad.

"The amazing deals and wide availability on offer at this time of year are also guaranteed to help put a smile on peoples' faces.

"Booking early can also help avoid disappointment, especially if you're planning a trip during peak times like the school summer holidays."
